Default OT: Big Brother Is Coming To A Newwork Near You

LINK to off site news article about FBI efforts to have congress pass a law giving them back door rights to any network in the USA.

Quote:
The FBI has drafted sweeping legislation that would require Internet service providers to create wiretapping hubs for police surveillance and force makers of networking gear to build in backdoors for eavesdropping,
Now this scares the hell out of me, not for the usual reasons, but because if they can get this access, then abuse of this access will become so rampant that new laws will be added to the books giving them the right to use hersay and other illegally obtained information in court gained from the abuse of these abilities.

Next they will want to place a "monitoring" camera in every room of every home in America... NFW! We must stop this here and now.

Ever see the Penn and Teller Bullsh*t episode about Big Brother? They got these people and told them they were being hired by national security and put them in a surveillance van and told them to keep watching a suspect car.

Then a couple of hourse later they had a hot chick walk across the line of sight of the camera, stop in front of a particular house and start making a saucy phone call to her boyfriend.

All but one of the people ignored the car to watch the girl and the one guy who didn't was a recent immigrant from Africa.

Good show Bullsh*t.

Biggest problem with that is they'll pour a few $Mil into a system and some 14 year old will hack in in about 6 weeks.

The FBI don't have the best IT services - they outsource most of it to begin with so it's plain stupid to let them control that kind of access.

No. That's not what will happen. Some guy who worked at two different places will note that the FBI demands everything conform to the SAME standards - including the backdoor password. It won't get hacked (at least, not right away); the password will become semipublic knoweledge.

And, of course, the people they're trying to actually catch will simply get a few Virtual Private Networks set up. Have fun breaking that 1024 bit (or whatever) PGP key this side of eternity.
