How do I engage the Enemy if I am in my Fort ???
I control some key bottleneck provinces with fortresses and my troops in these fortified provinces are set to "Defend." Unfortunately, that only allows the enemy to move into my province and not be engaged until the following turn when, if they are still present, I can "Break the Seige"
The problem is that my bottleneck is leaking and allowing units to move past me. If I set my troops to "Patrol" will that enable me to engage enemies as soon as they move into my fortified province?

Along with any province defense you have, which I believe always defends the land and not the fortress.

Considering the province defense is already wiped out by the time 'defending the fortress' is an issue.

Re: How do I engage the Enemy if I am in my Fort ?
This needs to be made more clear, this caught me out twice, both times I had a army more than capable of destroying an attacker in a province with a fort. Only to find myself besieged next turn, all my units stayed behind the fortress walls....arrrgh.
In order to defend the province not the fort, is the only order u give patrol?
It seems stupid to me, all units in a province should automatically defend the province 1st. If u want them to hide behind a fortresses walls, u should have to give them a specific order to do so. Not the reverse...why is this?

It's not unusual to have commanders which you -don't- want participating in the battle -- ex. researchers. In addition, this forces you to choose how they spend their time -- which is not completely unreasonable.
It's also quite possible that you'll only have a force sufficient to hold the walls for a while, and rely on a mobile, nastier, and probably much more expensive force to break sieges. In a multiplayer game, you might not want to reveal everything you have inside a fortress to a single probe...
