Smoke orientation

Is there anything brewing to change/adjust smoke orientation? It seems smoke fired by on-board or off-board arty lines up on a north to south axis. I'd like to be able to change that to a east - west axis at times to protect a flank or to better cover a flanking attack.

My apologies if this has been asked and answered before.
