Tech tree display?
OK, here's the problem. I'm attempting to totally re-work SE4's tech tree, and to some extent the combat system. Not adding anything new yet, just fiddling with what's there.
Anyway, I've been drawing out the actual tree, you know, tech name then lines to what it gives. The problem is I need to show this thing to others (for feedback), and scanning my scribbling in is.. less than effective.
Don't suppose there are any programs out there to help with this sort of thing? A simple flowchart program might help, but the ones I've found have been loaded with extra crap and slow usage.
Otherwise, I'll end up having to do stuff like this..
Physics
-shields
--shield I-V, phased shield I-V
--anti-shield weaponry
---shield depletors/distrupors
---phased weapons
-laser weapons
-armor
Chemistry
-armor
-explosive weaponry
Which doesn't look bad for that, but picture the entire tech tree like that, plus multiple interdependant branches..

Re: Tech tree display?
IF your in the MS world you could always test Visio out with it. Or use good old Cad.
What were you looking for? A tree branch design like the old tech charts in games that came out in the early 90's. Flow chart's poster size ?

Re: Tech tree display?
I'd just use the "line art" tool that's standard w/ MS Word.
------------------
Assume you have a 1kg squirrel
E=mc^2
E=1kg(3x10^8m/s)^2=9x10^16J
which, if I'm not mistaken, is equivilent to roughly a 50 megaton nuclear bomb.
Fear the squirrel.

Re: Tech tree display?
Phoenix-D,
Where is the data for the tech tree located? One could write a program to show this to you simply. For instance, in a tree view, like Windows Explorer's folder view...

Re: Tech tree display?
Err, I needed it for my custom tech trees, and can't view Excel regardless, but thanks anyway
Scott: one could. I've been meaning to learn VB, but as of yet I can't do that. I'll try the MS word line art; if that doesn't work I'll just use the method at the original post.

Re: Tech tree display?
Best tech chart I ever saw came with Civilization: Call to Power. It was poster-size, and had all sorts of interconnecting lines. Very nice.
