improbably impossible randomness
I've heard it talked about (I thought) of people checking some file that records all the rolls and how the AI makes its choices and things like that.
I'd really like to see that file; is there a way to do it?

Re: improbably impossible randomness
Activate Dom3 using the -dd switch (add more d to get more detail) and then read the log file.

Re: improbably impossible randomness
I don't understand. I typically activate Dom3 by clicking on it. I found a "Dom3config" file, but if I open with a text editor its just gibberish.
how do I activate Dom3 with the -dd switch?
Note: I'm on a Mac, which I know very little about. If I were on my PC, would I open it from a command line? I'm not sure how to do that on a Mac.

Re: improbably impossible randomness
Not sure how the Mac works. It's Unix based, so you should be able to get a command prompt (shell). If you can 'dom3 -dd' should work.
If not, the usual Windows approach is to right click the icon to edit Properties and add the -dd there. Something similar may work on the Mac?

Re: improbably impossible randomness
hmm...
I've managed to launch Dom3 from the UNIX terminal. If I add the -dd switch, it won't launch though (it will say "no such file")
I've also managed to open the Dom3 application options in the GUI and add the -dd swtich there. However, this turns the app into a folder (which I can then browse!) but I still can't manage to get it to launch with that command line switch.
any help?

Re: improbably impossible randomness
I believe the mac terminal is very similar to the linux terminal (being also based on unix). So here's how I do it:
First go to the dominions directory. For me that's:
cd ~/dominions3
For you maybe something like:
cd ~/Applications/dominions3
or something, I have no idea really. Anyway, it sounds like you've already found it.
Then, once in the Dominions directory, type:
./dom3 -dd
That should work I think. It does for me.

Re: improbably impossible randomness
got it!
open dominions3.app/contents/macos/dominions3 -dd
the farking dominions3.app is actually a folder that does something magical when you click on it to launch the game. if you want to use command line switches, the actual executable is deeper in the folder, and becomes confused by trying to use them at the magical dominions.app folder level
that's my explanation and i'm stickin with it. magic.
at any rate, i fixed it. now to read the stupid log file.

Re: improbably impossible randomness
Wow, I didn't know it would be so deeply hidden on the mac.

Re: improbably impossible randomness
Im usually preaching the love of the log file.
Actually its a "debug" file for Johan, so dont expect it to be TOO clear about what its telling you.
Even with that, I find it very interesting to read.
