Default The sound of the MG 34

Hello!

Panzer Bob and I made an interesting discovery when PBEMing. His Russian Partisans had a very impressive sounding MG34 comapred to the one my own German MG34s were making. For those of you who enjoy tweaking your own oobs bobs unit used the following sound:

"The sound is 162 in Crosses Sounds last update, and it effects Units 497 , 498 and 501. Personally I think it would make a grand MG42 sound as well." Panzer Bob.

I was quite impressed when the partisans opend fire on my lads and wished my own weapons sounded half as good!

Hope it's of use

The MG-34 had a sound like ra-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta, and the MG-42, had a weird sound, due to its high ROF, was something like a SWOOSH, for me its cool now(setting sounds for every weapon is boring)

Hi BK,

The main sound for the MG34 is probably 55.wav
I believe the main sound for the MG42 is 54.wav

I agree that 'Cross Sounds 1.0' 162.wav is probably a better MG34 than the current Cross Sounds 55.wav

I'm going to swap/rename those two sounds in my sounds folder; and if it works out I'll make that an update for CS 1.1

I think the current CS 54.wav is a good MG42

When trying to match sounds to weapons in SP, you can run into quite a few problems.
Usually, the sound is used by quite a few different weapons.
Sometimes a weapon will shoot one burst then, two bursts, so those sounds must match.

A weapon may also use several different sounds; so a Bren with one unit may sound like a Bren, but when another unit uses the Bren it sounds like a Vickers. If you change the Vickers sound to sound like a Bren, then your Vickers will now sound like a Bren.

Matching weapons and sounds, with so many nations and OOB, is near impossible. You want to make sure the sound is mostly right for where it's mainly used.

My philsophy has been to stay close to the orignal sounds, but improve the quality.

But I think I would like to fiddle with the Sten/Bren/Vickers sounds when I get the chance.

cheers,
Cross

Looking at spob16 (Germany) in Mobhack, the majority of the appearances of the the MG-42 have the sound set as 117. So, why is 54.wav in Cross Sounds 1.0 intended for the MG-42? To match up with the game, shouldn't whatever sound is determined to be the best MG-42 representation be file 117.wav instead?

I wonder if the museum at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds up the road from me will loan me their MG-42 for an afternoon to make a new sound file...I promise to clean it before I give it back

Hi Ross,

Thanks for this info; you are right that the main MG42 sound is 117.wav. There was an error in my sound guide that had the MG42 as 54.wav

To clarify, Cross Sounds Doesn’t change the OOB or sound map at all; so it’s only the sound guide that’s wrong. If you have CS installed, the game will still use the ‘correct’ sound. The MG42 also uses 55.wav sometimes, and the MG34 sometimes uses 117.
But as you pointed out, it would be better if the best MG42 sound was named 117.wav

I will make sure I use the best MG34 sound for 55.wav and the best MG42 sound for 117.wav in the next release.

As soon as I’ve changed a few other sounds I’ll release CS 1.1 with the improvements.

I’m now only about 90 minutes from The Aberdeen Proving Grounds myself. But haven’t got there yet. As soon as the weather gets decent in the spring I plan to take my boys there.

I do use youtube sometimes to try to nail down what weapons and vehicles should sound like. Youtube sound quality isn't the greatest, but if you listen to few videos you can get a good idea.

cheers,
Cross
