I guess my memory must have been playing tricks on me, then... and standardising it to 24 across the board makes sense to me.
That said, I realised that the unit 257 (30 Cal AAMG) actually shows a nice picture of two GIs with pre-war helmets manning a water-cooled (rather than usual air-cooled) version of .30 cal AAMG on some sort of pedestal mount.
I have no idea how common such water-cooled AAMGs were, but I guess a real purist (not me!) might suggest including both air-cooled (range 24) and water-cooled (range 30?) versions .30 cal AAMG in the US OOB. I don't think that would bring much added value in practice.
