Really? I did not know this? I thought your design would attempt to board and if successful, the SSD would kill both ships.

Well... you can attempt to board and get blown up in tactical, but not in strategic. The AI is cleverer than humans in one regard at least=-)

Re: help on strategy
Thanks. I never play tactical. Good to know. I have never been a fan of boarding ships due to the SSD, but this changes things. I will put this in the FAQ.
Slick.

Re: help on strategy
questions
1. what level is your tractor beam? it is possible that the ship may be outside its range
2. what level targeting system do you have? it is possible that your tractor beam is missing the ship.
3. how many ships are coming in through the wormhole? you can only board 1 ship per each of your ships/bases. if more than 1 ship coming thru then you could still be in trouble.
4. do you have repair capability on the station to repair the boarding party component after use?
i usually place a 5 ship patrol plus a base for repair and defense on each wormhole for normal use until the ai's start sending in fleets then i bump it up to be greater than the average sized fleet incoming.
then again i also play psychic so use that ability instead of boarding parties once i have the appropriate level, which seems to bypass the self destruct mechanism.

Re: help on strategy
Also, treactor beams will only work on target ships smaller than the tractoring ship.

Re: help on strategy
I think CNCRaymond hit it. Bases have no move points, and ships w/o move points remaining cannot board. At least, Last time I checked (pre 1.84)

Re: help on strategy
If I play tactical combat manually, I can drag enemy ship to range 1 and then take it over.

Re: help on strategy
What strategy is the base set to? Ships under computer control (such as in Strategic Combat) will not ever capture anything unless they are set to use the Board Ships (or is it Capture Ships) strategy- or a variant thereof.
