I guess rocks and sticks (a normal troll diet) are valuable in the world of Dom? Or the money may be weregild for the children the trolls are supposed to be fed (according to the spell description).

Perhaps the trolls then eat the gold in lieu of being deprived of children? Whoever said that you can't eat gold never met a troll.

I guess that's one way of making sure you get the minerals you need in your diet. Usually I'm recommending something like that for iron, though...
