Well, not only the possibility of having many units.

Think on: Modules should be far more restricted to skilled graphics, and now even someone with a paintbrush can do one.

And having a heavier graphic should be having a more powerful pc ... battles should be very very low at framerate when many units fighting and so on.

Now just imagine: MTW: Rome.

Perhaps if instead of modeling every unit they would model humans, vaetti, giants, etc, and then make skin for the different armors and model the different weapons and just combine them?

I know, it's still an assload of work, and wouldn't fit on anyhting smaller than dvd, but anyway...

What's MTW: Rome? Is it good as a game?

MTW = Medieval Total War. Technically, this should be Rome: Total War, of the Total War series, but I digress. Never played it or other games of this series myself though. Don't have the right graphic card for it, and not too keen on getting one yet ^_^.

Graphic is pretty good for Rome though. A trivia: Zen's europe map is borrowed from MTW I believe, with lots of touch-ups and editings to make it work for Dom 2.

Just thinking aloud:

It would be a really big job, but it would look great. Tuna is on the right track I'd say. Take basic infantry units for example. Make one human with a very low poly count, then texture him differently and attach the different weapons for the appropriate unit through code. Then you can make the anims for run, swing sword, bow and arrow, etc and have them in a package that gets called with code. I'm thinking of it the way one would make an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod.

This is all just theory and dreaming:

-Weapon/accessory package that can snap to parts of the body of any model using bones
-Infantry package
-Cavalry package
-giants
-spellcasters
-assassins
-heroes and commanders
-pretenders
-sooo many more

...wow, imagine the budget you would need to pull that off! Wish I had the money
