Default Poptype problems...

I am still confused with editing maps: I want to modify the independent defence strength for some provinces only:

#poptype seems to alter only the recuitable units: I used "#poptype 30" (feudal), but the independent defenders themselves are far from being those difficult feudals. Recruiting Longbows and Knights however does work.. Why are the independents not linked to the poptype as usual? Does dom2 assign poptype and independents randomly before applying the map file?

#independents affects the entire map only

Adding troops via #commander and #units is also a bad choice, for I want to fortify the possible starting locations only in the case that some players are not participating. If they are participating, then they also own those added commanders an units as a bonus...

What I really want would be a map command that alters independent strength for a single province only. Maybe #defence should work for independent provinces as well, based on the poptype!!!

Other ideas to achieve my goal?

There is sometimes strangeness with the province defenders, where the defenders are something other than the poptype would indicate. It might be that you ran into this phenomenon. Try it again.

Poptype is assigned randomly unless it has been specified in the map file, but if you have some kind of a typo with the #setland or other commands, it might cause problems. If you're using the #land command, it kills all units in the province, and in that case it might be possible that Dom2 assigns random indies (I don't know if this happens).

As for your start location problem, there is currently no answer. If the start location provinces do no have anything special in them, I don't see why it should be a problem, unless they are situated in or near bottlenecks that are supposed to stay bottled for a while.

By the way, what the hell is the #independents command? I've never heard of that one, it isn't in the mapedit.pdf and I've not seen it anywhere else either. What does it do?

Sets strength of independents for a map/scenario. It is used in Illwinter's scenarios, including the very first ones.
