Stock AI hasn't changed a huge amount, though there are a number of mods out there that have improved the AI. My personal favourite is Kwok's Balance Mod, but I'd recommend tinkering with as many as you can get your mits on.
As of v1.25 most of the really nasty bugs have been ironed out and the game is quite playable. Or not, depending on how much you hate the UI.
