More or less on the off-topic of "Forum Decorum", I was just browsing postings and looking at people's "ranks" (wondering if I would ever post enough to get myself promoted to corporal), when I noticed something that gave me a chuckle -- all you "seargeants" out there have your ranks misspelled (should be sergeant, according to my dictionary). So there! Now I can feel better for still being a lowly pfc.

(Actually, whoever is responsible for this can count themselves in good company. I read somewhere that Leon Uris -- and his editors -- misspelled sergeant 108 times in his bestseller "Battle Cry".)

suicide_junkie, you sometimes post a message with a single word, BUMP. Please, can you tell me what does it mean?

He does that to bump the thread back up to the top so that it doesn't get lost in the mass of old topics no-one looks at anymore. He does it to keep the discussion going, to keep the thread alive.

PS I know I'm not SJ, but hey, I knew the answer, and I'm sure he won't mind!

Do I really bump that much more than other people around here?
I really can't remember the Last time I did...
...A search tells me I've only used the word bump in five threads, not nessesarily as a "bump", either.

Not really, but every time I see it I cannot understand anything and that annoys me because I'm usually very interested in the discussion

I mentioned your name because the first time I saw it was in one of your Posts a while ago, and I spent some time trying to imaginate an English phrase that could match that four characters (B.U.M.P.) and with some sense (Expressions, components, strategies even PBW games)

Of course, I couldn't

" English phrase that could match that four characters (B.U.M.P.) and with some sense"

Heh. That is your problem right there- it is NOT a phrase. It's a word.

"bump" in this case means "bump it to the top". Think about keeping a volleyball in the air. "bump" in a non-internet context just means a small collison.

maybe it is intentional so that all 'seargeants' are considered to be 'hot stuff'

think about, think about it
