Taking cover wasn't up to individual soldiers to do on their own initiative (though in reality of course if fire came a wee bit close, he was going to do something about it!)

The troops may be in terrain cover, but the action of taking cover is entirely separate to their being in say woodland terrain.

Infantry in the game already can take cover (an active action) as a result of taking fire - you will see the "X takes cover" message, and if successful they may break LOS, as well as breaking the chain of fire.

The take cover command is there as a voluntary action in case (or if you are certain) that you have been spotted, the unit then attempts to take cover (or if already down, wiggles to a new fire position, hopefully not spotted).

It has nothing to do with being in cover terrain whatsoever (although it will be easier to go into cover if in covering terrain). And there is no such thing as "no cover to be had" - flat terrain will have lumps and bumps, individual bushes or rocks etc that provide cover. Flat terrain is not a lawnmowered golf course - think of it more as the rough (as found in a Scottish Golf course, not one of those manicured golf courses).
I am glad I was in the navy.

The Abrams are a lot safer steel boxes to be in when things go bad than the ones 50 years back.....or a T-72

I can confirm what Mobhack said. In theory, a well-trained rifle squad should take cover or return fire AFTER it is given the appropriate command by the squad leader. Of course in actual combat, things will not be as smooth as in training, but there's were you can separate soldiers based on experience, training quality etc.

And yes Wdll, I also thought that serving in the Navy or Air Force was probably better than the Army. Although that thought comes easier after a river crossing exercise near Evros river. In June. With the mosquitos and the heat of the area. Two months before you get discharged /rant mode off

Id say it works like that only in theory.

That does not seem very efficient.

Seems more like something that is teached for recruits and well trained squads can work more independently because they know what they do and what they are getting in to.

Or maybe thats the case when operating outside a war zone in a precence of civilians.

In ancient times the orders were important because the formations were large and sometimes attacks were made in unision with hundreds of people.

But back to the topic: do you prefer using more expensive elite infantry or more units with cheaper infantry ?

Think of the take cover command as relocate try to break LOS if think you have been spotted. or no you have been as fired on. Of course you have no idea if you were successful till the next turn so it’s use the MP to fire or use them to hopefully break contact.
