Starfleet Command is quite nice, imho. Almost no story, no involving metagame or anything, but a very solid tactical space combat engine with competent graphics. It does take some time to get into,...

If you use the 'colonize' command ( pointed at a planet ) your ship will automatically fill all its storage with population, so you dont have to transfer manually

1 reinstall the game
2 load up a save file from such a big battle
3 does it still crash ?
4 if it does, try emulating the problem again, not using the save file
5 still crashing ? than it would...
