It's one nation per era, though they change over eras in signifigant ways. For example, late-era Ulm bans all magic outright.

Well, technically you cannot have the exact unit "Shoguns" but if you play as Jomon (late era, only) you'll be able to fight with ninjas, samurais, et cetera. Neat stuff.

Don't worry, you'll hear A LOT more about that in the next section. The reason I split it in two parts is that I wanted to get at least something out because the part I'm doing now is pretty damn big...

Well, it does kinda add a new layer of strategy when it comes to designing a custom Pretender God and such, as you have to take Eras into consideration. That said, I'll put "Adds to the replay value"...

Dominons RPG is the way to go. Playing as a Prophet would be hella cool, being able to traverse the randomly generated world and convert peoples and fend off zealots. Oh man, I start shaking just...

Dominions RPG and steampunk setting are both very cool ideas. An RTS might also work if they focus more on the battles and unit coordination, positioning, tactics, et cetera than with base-building,...

IIRC you can set the AI parameters (agressive, defensive, normal, and mixed) at the beginning of each new game.
