Recording information about systems, planets and ship locations makes sense. I hate it when I peek into a system, see another races colony and leave then 10 turns later cannot remember which planets...

How about biological warfare mines? They cause a plague on a ship that spreads wherever the ship goes.
How about neutron bomb mines? They kill the crew and reduce the ship movement.

I generally don't use them against the AI, I assume it knows what is on my ship anyway and I like surprises. I try to get them to be removed when I play hot seat.

If you want to defend against Organic armor with mines just put larger warheads on them. A medium warhead does 200 points of damage, enough to destroy one organic armor component. IIRC once an...

There is an ability Phased Shield Generation. It may be able to be used as a facility ability.
Well that ability doesn't seem to do the job but it does give a well protected building.
