Mine had no box. I also would have liked a box, not so much for the protection, but the manual tends to get lost on the shelf surrounded by the game boxes for all my other games.

In the full game, with the equal start option turned on, you still have a good reason to play gas giants as you will always get to have at least 4 facilities on each world.

If the bug kicked in when you had a lot of research points, have you tried scrapping a couple of research facilities to see if that gets you below the bug threshold?

I think the biggest thing that should be changed in diplomacy is a problem with the whole strategy game genre: Neither the AI nor the human players understand the concept of a limited war.

Fight for stalemates, don't win, don't lose. Cripple their ships but don't actually kill them. Every turn the AI likes you a little bit more so eventually they'll offer you peace.
