This sounds distinctly like you don't have
enough memory. I have a 500 mhz K7 with
256 megs of ram. Turns go in 30 seconds or
so with 14 or so AI players and a fully
populated late-game universe...

Personally, I find fleets with lots of
fighters to be really annoying. It slows
down strategic combat quite a bit, and in
any case the A.I. doesn't really appear to
know how to use them correctly...
