Did you declare war or did the AI?
What is your score relative to the rest of the AI's? (ahead by 100% or more, ahead by 50%, about even, or below)
This would influence their response.

I agree that PDs are needed. In my post I said the PDs are a MUST. I would not consider PDs an offensive weapon. My point is that the fighters need to be used as the weapons for carriers....

I wasn't going to share the stop short trick, but you're right it works like a charm. This is really true if you have any early game escort vs escort or frigate vs frigate battles.

With NO treaty, in demo 0.99, your ships will go around the other ships when trying to reach a destination. Similiar to avoiding a cosmic storm.

Oh ya! Finally spent some serious time on demo 0.99 and the AI is vastly improved over 0.56. Only managed to acquire 1 planet through tribute, no ships and only 1 trading partner so far....
