Make them the "seed" for a new tech tree. This allows them to be improved upon.

I noticed this drawback for "none"-breathers and thought it would be good if this was balanced out - it would need a hardcoded change, but what if non-breathers has reduced Life Support requirments...

Well...

I am watching my AI run itself by setting all the ministers on, some of the empire options off, then just hitting "end of turn" and seeing how my AI performs.

I have been trying for ages to get a race to demand the surrender of an enemy, it doesn't seem keen to do it.

Are there any known ways to inrease the chance of this?

I've been playing with this, and I think the only way is to make a big fighter, then to mod a load of tech to make it usable on fighters (as per the comment about the pirate/nomad mod)

The advantage of this would be, other than "roleplay" reasons, that the ships don't need their own warp capability and so gain extra space within the hull for other gear, or reduced build/maintenance...

Sounds like one of the AI files is USC.
Best bet is to rename them all, then drop them back in one at a time, load the game and play a turn, see which one causes the problem - then fix it or post it...
