I am experimenting with the various pretenders and decided that a master alchemist with "Alchemy II" would be nice. I assumed it would give a bonus to transforming one gem type to aother. But when I go into the lab to do that, it still costs 2 of any kind per astral and two astral for any other kind of gem.
Do my bonuses only apply to producing gold from gems?
I ask because this pretender is much more expensive than the other regular humans. Am I doing something wrong?
I believe that's how it was in Dom I, though the costs may have changed. The alchemist ability to pull gold from gems can be a major strategic factor, if you build your plans around it. If you're not making that a central part of your strategy, though, it probably doesn't make sense to use him.

I think it would be nice if the master alchemist could turn one astral gem into one of any other gem... but still require 2 normal gems to make one astral gem. Thus, converting water into fire (for example) would only result in a 50% loss rather than a 75% loss. I always assumed the master alchemist would be more efficient at gem conVersions...
