AI Files (Borg, Cardassian, Army of Light) + some Component Mods
Have just posted some mods into the Mods archive which may be of interest.
I have taken the liberty of making some amendments to some of the race files that are around, and have also copied some others, so firstly I'd like to acknowledge the efforts of those others.
The Army of Light files were developed from the Ukra Tal race files.
The Cardassian files were developed from the Jraenar race files.
The Borg files were developed from the Borg files that accompanied the Ship Set and reflect my own personal preferences (so they do not reflect any particular deficiences).
I have spent most attention on the General and Research files, although I have made a few tentative mods to the DesignCreation files. I have played a couple of short games without any problems, so I'm concentrating on tweaking the AI now. However, it is taking me a while to get my head around the Anger, Fleets. Politics and Settings files so I have not made any changes to them as yet.
I have files for Army of Darkness but they are just copies of the AOL with a couple of names changed (eg Kosh====>Morden) so I havent included them.
As a note, I play with Mephistos Mod, and level 1 point defence available at game start (with higher subsequent research costs) in order to beef the AI opponents up.
I'm also currently playing with Destroyers available at game start (couldnt logically see why 300kT Colony Ships and Transports were available, but, not a 300kT warship).
I have included three other files as well; Components.txt, Comp_273.bmp and Components.bmp. The Components.txt file has been modified to;
- reduce the cost of Remote Mining Components (so that even a destroyer miner manages to make a slight profit - these costs may need to be adjusted slightly as I havent yet played a game through to battleships, etc)
- include a new component called a Constructor which is basically a smaller Version of a Shipyard (which fits into a destroyer)
- include a new component called a Resupply Depot which is intended to make bases supply sources as per planets with resupply depots. The supply aspect unfortunately is not working (see earlier post) so I'm still working this one through (although I'm very happy to get help!).
For those who dont know, the race files go in the Pictures/Races/"Racename" directories, the Components.txt file goes in the Data directory and the two bmp files go in the Pictures/Components directory. Although this sounds basic, make a backup copy of your old files. These files do work ok, but, you may wish to switch back at some time.
Anyway, have fun with the mods! I'll be interested in any feedback that anyone has.
Regards,
God Emperor

In support of this, the warship hull holds more engines than the transport & colony hulls, so perhaps it takes higher tech to design a hull of a given size which can take the stress.

Hmmmm...A possibility.
Still, I could create a 5 engine 300kT warship and make that available instead...
(I love what you can do to this game!!)

Aren't transport ship traditionally higher tonnage than war ships? You don't need the type of hulls that war ships do (note I am no expert here just going by gut feel so I could be wrong). Cargo and colonizer ships could be smaller ships with cargo pods attached all around them just to haul cargo. The designs might not work well for a combat ship but to transport cargo in a relatively peaceful area it would work.

Re: AI Files (Borg, Cardassian, Army of Light) + some Component Mods
In naval terms a freighter requires far fewer people to crew it and has limited (if any) redundancy of systems.
A warship requires lots of people to crew it and the capacity to take damage and still fight. A warship has double hulls, compartmentalisation and all sorts of other stuff crammed into its hull.
It would be more realistic to create a 300KT warship with a max of 3 engines to reflect the clumsiness of low tech fighting ship.
