OT: my day
well, I was asked to be the admin for the engineering section of the school computers. As part of this I had to redo all the networking because we got some new mini hubs that were to replace the old 10mbit hubs. So I hooked everything up and daisy chained all four hubs together and everything was working so I left. Next day the net goes down. So they tracked a packet collision where I had just networked all the computers and found that I had accidently hooked up two hubs together. Normally this would just just bring down the local area network, but the lan was also connected to the high school's network which also happend to be connected to the middle school's network. All and all a few thousand people didn't have the internet today because of me.
So if anyone would like to share something really stupid that they have done to cheer me up, feel free.
on a side note, I was also almost run over by one of my neighbors while walking home from school. What a way to end a friday.

Re: OT: my day
That is a really crappy way to design a network, having multiple schools all on the same network like that... are the schools connected together or something?

Re: OT: my day
yes, the schools are connected to each other. I don't know why, but they are.

Re: OT: my day
I've been working on an Excel VBA routine for the past week, and have been ripping my hair out with it - it's the first time I've ever used VBA in any way and it is VERY different to what I'm used to (I think in C/C++ terms). So, ok, I learned the basics, writing some code for the past week, real basic stuff...and it doesn't work AT ALL.
Just found out why: REAL stupid mistake. I was using COLUMNS, ROWS (like Excel does when you use it as a spreadsheet app) rather than ROWS,COLUMNS (like VBA does when you use "Cells" properties).
I blame bill gates.
Still a real embarassing mistake. And I have no excuse for wasting at least three days trying to figure it out.

Re: OT: my day
Lots of schools are set up that way. One domain and multiple subnets. Everything managed from a central location. I sometimes need to set a vpn up from an office in a school, back to our vpn concentrator downtown. Often I find things like daisy chains of subnets connected from school to school with wireless bridges. Makes for some real slow access when a whole county school system ends up passing across one wireless link. I also find a lot of Novel networks and even some that run on Apple. One school system I was working on had a 20 year old Sun setup.

Worst thing I ever did was set a router up on site, and then forget to write (save) the configuration before I left.

Don't jump down stairs, even if they have a landing half-way down.
Nope, falling wasn't the problem. Hitting my head on the overhang was. Ouch.
