Default Fighting Strategies

I was looking through the data files (seeing what would be left behind, and what I don't need for my mod), and noticed something odd in the DefaultStrategies.txt file.

No matter what your stragey is, (for AI and auto combat), you will always target a Planet Last....so basically if you had your planet filled with WP, and had a couple bases in orbit with nothing but armor, the AI would take out the bases, while the planet was launching missles, or firing weapons at it (and if it had PD, it would stop you from hitting the bases with missles)

I think the AI would do a lot better, putting the unarmed ships/bases behind planets.

Unfortunately this would then make the ships vulnerable to bases and sats. I've lost many battles set on auto because of this. It's the main reason I now play out planet assaults until the defenses are gone.

How can you be vulernable to unarmed ships and bases? I mean they are useless after all in an attack, but they get priority over a planet that could be firing heavy weapons at you....it just seems odd to me, perhaps I'm missing something.

Default Re: Fighting Strategies

There is a line in DefaultStrategies.txt that says what priorities to use - 'Use Type Priority First'. If this line is set to false, then the ship will use the Has weapons, most damaged, nearest etc. priorities instead. That means if the planet is nearest and has weapons on it, it will be targeted. However, if there is a ship or a base on the same distance, ship will target them instead of planet.

If 'Use Type Priority First' is True, you will force the ship to use type priorities and will go after ships (by default) first and look which ship has weapons, is most damaged etc. first. When there are no more ships it will go down the list in the order specified in the file (Bases, Fighters, etc.). This type of attack is more suitable for Kamikaze ships and Fighters then normal attack ships.
