Sorry, I run Windows 2k with a dual boot for 98. This allows me to switch between OS's.
Have you consider talking you mom into getting an OEM Version of Windows 98? A new HD would also be a great benifit.
You see, your current drive could become a slave to a new HD which is sporting a complete Version of 98 (not an upgrade)
As far as keeping it from crashing, I have no advise other than look for things at
www.downloads.com Or hit the MS Update pagehttp://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and look for stuff there.
Reinstalling it may help, but unlikely. You should really talk to her about getting an new HD and at minimum, Windows 98. Millenum is also a fairly good OS, and you can pick an OEM Version (FULL VERSION) and a new HD up together for around $200. bucks.
Or you can just simply F-Disk the drive and go from their with a fresh install. But I do not recommend that unless you have an OEM (Full Version) of Windows 95 or above, and know what you are doing. There is a lot to it, and quite frankly, I still screw it up when I do it, and I have done a few time.
Best of luck to you.
EDIT:
Hey capnq, I was reading your bios, and noticed this
