Default Wondering about a tech-mod...

Did anyone ever think about making a mod that would change the tech-tree, components, vehiclesiezes, and facilities to start at the time we live in now?
So at first you would only have satellites, short range drones (8 squares?), and extremely short range ships(2 squares?).

At the start it would also have to be very expensive to build a ship with a high range, not impossible, but you would have to spend your resources right. Also colony ships would be impossible at first, and any extra resources would have to come from remote mining (by drones if possible). RM would have to give more resources than in vanilla off course...

Facilities at the start also generate less resources, maybe 300?

There would be no energy weapons available yet, maybe no weapons at all, i mean you don't know if there is anyone else to fight.

Would it be possible to withhold weapon (or any) techs untill you make contact with another race?

thought about it some more...
there would have to be more conventional weapons, miniguns or something, missiles..etc

Maybe also change the general scale of things, so the first ships would remain at 100kt or something, but this would resemble a small ship only capable of travelling to mars (which is still quite big!). But the largest ships would be around 5000kt, or maybe 10000kt?

In my mod-in-progress (XEO MOD - want to help? I've got a thread about it...), starting at Low tech level allows building of satellites, fighters, and bases only - no full-fledged starships... and I reduced the ship sizes to something more realistic (frigate = 20kT, dreadnought = 240kT)...

Way back before grad school and finals and marriage and the rest of RL interfered, I started the Basic Tech Mod, based on just this premise. Since I found the job was very tedious and prone to error when done by hand, I put off completion until I finished my Component Editor--which is still incomplete (albeit recently restarted in VB 6.0. There is a larger Version of the editor floating somewhere around here.) Feel free to take up the idea--if you want my files, they're on my HD somewhere.
