Amending data files
Help. I know I have asked this before but please help.
When I play SEIVG, I play single player with TDM modpack as standard.
I want to do three things.
1 decrease the speed at which all shipyards and planet based shipyards build;
2 increase the cargo space occupied by 1 million people (I hate ships nominally lugging 250 million people round the map - yeah right, the whole population of the US in one spaceship I should cocoa); and
3 decrease the rate at which planetary populations reproduce.
I had thought that 1 and 2 would be a simple case of tweaking the relevant settings in the data file.
But, I go into my Shrapnel Games program file, into SEIVG and the TDM Modpack, change the data settings, say yes when it asks me if I want to save, BUT it does not pick up and make the amendments in the game!!
What the buggery am I doing wrong? and how do I sort out item 3 above?

Re: Amending data files
If you make the changes in the SETTINGS.txt then you must start a new game.
You can make some of the changes in the Components.txt, IE Edit the cargo ability on colony modules and or Cargo components, and then return to your game and the new values should take place.

Re: Amending data files
Atrocities, do me a favour and talk me through how to do the three things. And should I change the files, and then restart the game? and should I only change things in the main game data files or in the TDM file?
And on a separate subject, which bugger did the AI for the Galactica Colonials - they are most viscious, aggressive, violent punks I have ever come across the ****es. Talk about glassing planets on absolutely no cause from my part, the viscious pigs

1. - decrease shipyard build values in facilities.txt and components.txt. Decrease the basic planet construction value accordingly. I think it is in settings.txt file.
2. - increase population mass in settings.txt
3. - increase "population reproduction check" in settings.txt (it is 1 by default, changing it to 2 will half the reproduction rate)
You must reload SE to have these changes working.

Re: Amending data files
Cheers guys, now do I make these amends in the main game file or in the TDM file?

Re: Amending data files
If your using the TDM mod, I'd vote for making them in the TDM file if the TDM mod has a data folder with the needed files in it.
(To be safe, you might want to make a back up copy of whatever data folder you choose to edit first.)

Most changes to Settings.txt will be picked up in a game in progress if you reload the game after altering Settings.txt. The only ones that will make no difference are the few that are used only when the game is started, such as number of computer players and max random planet values. But, the overall max value for a planet can still be changed mid-game (from value improvement plants and such).

I always thought settings.txt is red only once, when game is generated . For example, can you change the max. number of ships per player in mid-game ?

Yes I am sure. That is another setting that is only read when the game is created. And, it is just the default value, able to be altered in-game when you create the game (not mid-game though). Try changing population mass or base fleeting settings.
