Pop Reproduction rate mod possible?
Howdy,
Love the game. But, I do feel that the reproduction rates (population growth) that I am getting are rather unrealistic. Sometimes as high as 16-18%. I do understand that this is per year, not per turn, but wow! My people (and presumably others) must be rabbits.
I've mod'ed the settings.txt file a bit, and my average seems to hover around 8% now. I set "starting empire repro rate" to 1, and reduced uhh...another setting (I'm at work now, w/o access to the file to see exactly which one). I have, basically, lowered all relevant Ratings to 1.
HOWEVER, I haven't messed with the race stats Ratings. In there, there is a "threshold" rating which, for population reproduction is set at 10. What function does this threshold rating serve?
And what is the actual reproduction rate formula? Anyone know?
Ideally, I would like to get it down to a base rate of 1%-3% or so per year, with only moderate adjustments for happiness levels. Again, right now, even my "Angry" populations reproduce at around 6-8%.
Anybody got any suggesstions?
Thanks,
Alarik

Re: Pop Reproduction rate mod possible?
I've noticed in 1.11 you can only set your population growth as low as 91% of the base line rate. I used to go to 80% to get points for other things I wanted. However, my 'unhappy' worlds are now reproducting at 0% and 1% growth rates with the value at 91%.
I am not sure, but I am wondering if they have modified the significance of planetary conditions on population growth.

Re: Pop Reproduction rate mod possible?
Hmmmm...yeah, I would prefer being able to lower the repro rates universally so that all races, by default, start at 1-3% repro. After that, their specific racial mods could come into play...I was hoping...

Re: Pop Reproduction rate mod possible?
The setting "Empire Starting Percent Reproduction := 10" in settings.txt controls the base reproduction for all races as far as I can tell. Can't imagine why you want to lower it though. I double mine as I feel popgrowth is to slow. Takes forever to build up a decent population base.

Hmmm. Careful about balance (?) -- one of the major benefits of Organic, besides its extremely nifty armor and weapons, is its potential for growing absolutely huge populations, quickly, via Gestation Vats / Medical Labs / Replicant Centers. If you lower the growth rate, Replicant Centers, which add pop at a flat rate to every colony in a system, become even more valuable.

Re: Pop Reproduction rate mod possible?
When I modified the "Empire Starting Percent Reproduction := 10" down to 1 I still get 6-8% growth. I figured that with all the mods for happiness et al that that was still awful high.
Secondly, why do I want to do this? Well, I'd like to get it down to a more "realistic" level of growth, that's why I'd like 1-3% rather than 8-16%. I prefer the economics and demographics of 4X games to be as much like reality as possible...and growing at 16% a year is out of control!
Lastly, I'll keep my eye out for the benefits of the Organic and related play balance issues...this could throw things off...
So...anyone yet know of the actual formula used for reproduction yet? I still can't figure it out...
Thanks,
Alarik
