Default Patrolling

What is the effect of patrolling provinces? Advantages and disadvantages? How to deal with bandits? Just decrease taxes? Raise defense?

Have no idea how this happened but I got bandits in a 20 defense province with a castle. That just doesn't seem to me like where they'd set up shop, but hey. How do I get my unrest back down?

Patrolling and lower taxes reduce unrest. Patrollers work well for this, although this also kills population (only if there's unrest to reduce).

If you're doing, say, blood slave hunting, you pretty much have to rely on patrols.

Patrollers also have a chance to catch sneaking units, e.g. scouts, spies. So does a province defense of at least 11.

Another use for patrolling is in provinces with a castle. Units on "patrol" are outside the castle, and will assist the province defense (if any) should the province be attacked. If you'd really rather not be sieged, and a threat is present, having some patrollers would help.

Magic can reduce unrest, although the only one that comes to mind is the Fata Morgana global
enchantment. There may be others. *shrug*

Actually you can blood hunt without patrolers...

With a single hunter in a province getting 5-10 slaves per turn I set taxes to 80% and never had unrest go over 10, this was over a period of maybe 10 turns or so. Now if you up the hunters this low tax method may not be able to keep up with unrest, though I wonder what a zero tax in a crap income province would give you...

A 0% tax rate will allow 3 level-2 blood mages to work with no major issues. If you have an army come by and patrol every once in a while you can go up to 5 hunters and keep things under control.
