Some comfort here, guys...
Events suck.
So I am sitting there, in an MP game, with my god and three trusted, powerful mages, not even a handful skeletons left under my command, and a besieging force in front of my walls. My capital is the Last province owned.
No worries, they need a turn to break down my walls, so I get time to summon a couple of troops for a famous Last stand. Hmm. Not many gems left. Perhaps next turn.
Said next turn, I get an unlucky event and my lab burned down.
Oh, come on. I can enter the lab, forge items and cast spells while under siege. Why not build one? Even a single crucible and a graveyard (or two) would have been enough...
Bleh. Oh, my settings were Order 2, Luck 3. Heat 2, too, so probably that's why my lab caught fire. Bleh bleh.

Because in order to build a lab, you have to go outside, quarry stone, chop wood, and perform other acquisitions....which you can't do when people have barricaded you in the castle, unless you want to dismantle your own castle to build that lab....but that would be a very bad idea.
Plus the construction worker's union prohibits them from working under such conditions, to boot.

Or, more arcane and specialized gear is needed.
Sounds pretty unlucky. Those were your starting scales ... were they also the scales in your remaining province when that happened?
Maybe you need the "Invoke Karmic Backlash" spell...

A makeshift lab would have done it, too. I can't imagine that my castle's wall need all that mortar and stones and wood, especially when they're nearly torn down anyway.
Yep, my scales were just that in my province, and my dominion is still pretty high.
Just wanting to say that a destroyed lab when you are about to do a famous Last Stand rates far, far worse than a temple burndown in the second turn.

This a sad "coup de grâce" !
But you did lose the game before the lab burned, it doesn't look as if it turned the tide ...

Re: Some comfort here, guys...
Here is trully horrible story of one MP game:
turn 2:A hailstorm has devastated the countryside killing cattle and shepherds. Three percent of the population has died. Tax losses was forty pounds of gold.
turn 4:A very ill omen was seen and rumors of it have spread through the entire province
and finally turn 6...
turn 6:
A fire has destroyed the arcane laboratory.
turn 6:
A plague has struck the land. Empty cabins and rotting corpses litter the landscape. Half the population of the province has died
That's what I'm calling "bad luck"! BTW luck was 0...

Hmm, seems that ill omen was right.

Heck if I was one of those wizards standing next to you... I would have burned down the lab too. Who wants to do work the Last few days of being alive.
The lab wasn't going to save you... at this point only one thing could have kept you alive:
Diplomacy
Convince the one attacking you that if he lets you live then you will join with him in attacking his enemies for the next 40 days. This has a slim chance of working... but still at least its a chance. Plus you could have bribed him with your existing gems as well to arrange for some peace treaty.... 30 death gems will make even the wisest pretender consider the offer of a peace treaty. (unless you are the Last one)
That build a lab thing would have changed nothing.
