Off topic - sciffy question
I remember a few threads back someone mentioned a new ST series coming out (ie not TNG, not DS9, not VOY, but something new.)
Anyone got any more details about this? I'm only half trekkie (other half Klingon=-) but I like to kep up to date.
Pleeeease don't tell me it's just another Star Fleet saves the day show. They have a huge scifi universe to explore, why not do a show based on a Klingon ship, or a Romulan one? Why not resurrect Lore and Dr Soong and put them in a trendy apartment with Data and Spot in a Frasier- like spin off sitcom? Anything, as long as it's different...

Re: Off topic - sciffy question
I agree. I think Sci fi has moved on from the episodic heydays of TOS and TNG. It was all very revolutionary in its day but Bab5 and even Farscape have raised our expectations. DS9 tried to catch up and Voyager was just TNG all over again, but I would like to see the ST franchise really do something new, groundbreaking and challenging again.
ST has a huge fan base and a great universe, I just wish they'd do something a little more adventurous with it. Why not make a "Twilight Zone" type program with a different set of (alien) characters each week? They don't even need a different story, they could have a consistent arc throughout, just portray it from varied perspectives.
At least make a program set on an alien ship or community. We know the Klingons almost as well as humans now, I'm sure they could get away with a series about a Klingon warship without alienating too many human viewers. Losing the human perspective and looking at the unverse from a whole diffrent culture / mindset would be a huge and unprecedented step in scifi and entertainment as a whole.
They could even make some good viewing out of a Klingon domestic soap opera. How about a xenobiology documentary? A ferengi game show? A Vulcan sitcom? Anything?
But no, we'll just get a new starfleet uniform and a bunch of humans (with token vulcan) saving the federation by imposing contmporary western cultural values on alien races. *yawn*
I wish they'd explore that universe, there must be life beyond the prime directive...

Re: Off topic - sciffy question
You have to consider that behind every Klingon is an actor who spends four hours a day in a makeup chair. Most "aliens" are humanoid because of real world logistics. If you want to have large numbers of really bizarre aliens, you need either a large FX budget or an animated show.

Re: Off topic - sciffy question
After reading all the reviews of the new show, I may sit this one out.
I too would have liked to see a klingon side of the show or maybe even more with the E class ship.
Maybe BSG will make it's return soon and save me from the What maybe a ST hell.
