Version problems from Steam and PBW Updates
Howdy,
I'm involved in a pbw game which is currently on hold due to some of our players having their SEV version automatically updated to v1.58 by Steam, a version not compatible with the mod we're using (Balance Mod 1.09). I'm trying to work out what our options are at this point and how long we can expect to have to wait for a compatible version on pbw so we can decide what to do.
I've heard Balance Mod 1.09a should be available soon (21ish/10/07) which will allow us to continue our game on SEV1.58.
How long does it usually take for PBW to be updated with new mods and versions?
Can anyone tell me if (and how) Steam users can install the previous version 1.44?
(I've read in another forum how to turn automatic updates off, but that won't help us now.)
Is there a way to install and run multiple versions of SEV on the same PC?

Re: Version problems from Steam and PBW Updates
Is this one of my games?
I already have BM 1.09a, or at least 2 files soemone sent me that seemed to do the trick.
I have 2 versions. Up to date and previous version. Until now it was a simple matter of just of just updating the older one, but the recent patch messed things up by upgrading my most recent version. I ended up having to delete the old version, reinstall, and an old patch worked on that one. I assume it set the registery to the newly installed copy.

Re: Version problems from Steam and PBW Updates
Yep, RPGame2. I'm playing Garvol That was the worst turn for us to stop on!
I think those two files were just 1.44 ones hacked until 1.58 would accept them and start, at least that's how it sounded in the email. I'm worried there are other things that need to be changed/adjusted to work correctly in the new version which may be missed. There was something about all colonies, even new ones always having 300 troops when attacked as the order the troop/pop settings are read changed between versions. What we need is an 'official' 1.09a with this kinds of fixes that's supported by pbw. I'll ask if this is planned or not in the Balance Mod forum .
To get two versions, did you just install to two different locations?

Re: Version problems from Steam and PBW Updates
The registry is set when you run SE5.exe. All you have to do to ensure the proper copy is patched is to run it before running the patcher.
(cross-posted from SEnet) :
If you purchase a game CD, it is trivial to install multiple versions. All you have to do is make a copy of the installation (eg: in a folder named SE5 1.44), and just patch one copy. I am not aware of any way to do this with Steam, however. You could try making a copy of the Steam\SE5 folder, but I'm not sure if Steam will allow non-standard paths...

Re: Version problems from Steam and PBW Updates
Thanks Fyron, that worked like a charm.
Captain Kwok said he would like to have a small patch for BM1.09 done around the end of this weekend, so once pbw is updated with that we should be able to continue using SEV 1.58.
Randallw, I hope your Primes aren't as nasty as Donald there! He must have been watching too much itchy and scratchy I guess.

Re: Version problems from Steam and PBW Updates
Version upgrades on PBW are entirely dependent on how much free time the admins have to do them. (And for SEV, that basically means Geo.)
While you're waiting for PBW to be updated, the host could turn off autoprocessing and run the turns manually offline.
