Default Problems with Vista/patch?

I'm on vacation at the moment and trying for the first time to run dominions on my wife's laptop. Copied everything via thumb drive from my XP box to the Vista laptop and did a test run, everything seemed to work fine. Get out of town and try to take one of my turns only to find a new patch has just come out, so I install it. Finally take my turn and everything seems to work - the turn shows through the Dom GUI as taken, the orders are correctly saved when I go back into the game, but there is no .2h file generated. I feel like I'm missing something obvious, is there something different in Vista?

Yeah the saves will be in a path similar to this with UAC on:

C:\Users\YourFriendsVistaUserName\AppData\Local\Vi rtualStore\Program Files\dominions3\savedgames

What is the path of your dom3 install?
If it is in program files then you will likely have problems with paths. If you use something like C:\Games\dominions3 then it should work in Vista without a hitch.

The old trouble with Vista vs. XP, it has nothing to do with the patch specifically. Edi wrote a FAQ entry about it by now, I think.

Yep, there's a FAQ entry in the second post, the first proper FAQ entry in fact.

Vista stores the new files on a hidden folder on the specific user account you run it on (which the directory has already been quoted), for security, privacy, and anti-virus purposes. You can also turn off this feature and have it save directly into ProgramFiles instead of /Appdata, but it's generally not worth the hassle because you get annoying firewall/security messages all the time. You get use to it.

I went through the same thing when I started looking for the .h files.

You can also turn the f*** annoying UAC off. That's what I did and files are in the regular directory.
