Click on the hitpoints. Or, reference one of the fan documentation sources (Edi's DB, or the wiki lch started.)

Actually since you asked that question.....

Bring up the view of the unit and click on Hit Points. That is your answer.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
With the unit view still up click on Fatigue. There is the units age. When they hit old-age they will start getting afflictions like limp, or weakened, or blind. And even diseased which will lower it 1 hp a turn until it finally dies.

WAIT,
now click on Leadership. Not only do you see the Normal units number, but also the number of Undead, and the number of Magic units they can lead.

THERE'S YET MORE!
click on Action Points, click on Precision, click on Morale. Heck just click everything. Oh and dont forget to click weapons and armor also.

AND FOR THIS SPECIAL OFFER!!!
Try hitting "Shift-I" (capital i) and see the code number for that unit. This can be important later for figuring out who will do things first, or for modding your own changes to the game.

Also try hitting "r". If the game was started with rename on then you can choose a new name for your unit. Useful in solo games for keeping notes. (if you are going to give your prophet a fancy prophet name then be sure to do it BEFORE you make them your prophet)

Sorry Im feeling in a strange mood. But seriously, click everything on the map screen, and the unit screen, and any other screen. There are lots of information bits that you will want to ask about later.

I don't think the unit number has anything to do with action order. When created every unit just gets an index (like this is the 1287th unit created in this game, with indices getting free again when someone dies who's not special like pretenders or heroes) and the actions are ordered after the index.

I think this is actually the most common way of measuring the size of your unit. If you try to click on it with your mouse, you'll just wake up your wife. So just get a ruler and measure the size of your unit directly.

If your unit measurements are impressive you may have other reasons to wake up your wife.

I just saw a Hydra Hatchling that came out of a Transformation. It got the sprite for one of the old hydras somehow, so it looks enormously huge, even though it's only size 3.
