Puzzling settings.txt issue?
Hello,
I don't have the modding experience that many of the members of the SEIV modding community have. However I can make simple changes without having to reinstall SEIV to get everything working properly again :-)
Having said that I am baffled by the following...
I want to change the spread on the number of random AI players that are chosen for random computer empire settings. I understand that this simple change should be easy to make in the setting.txt file. However no matter what I do it does not seem to adhere to my changes. I have tried dozens of times with the same results.
For example: I can change all the numbers to 4 for minimum and maximum settings. However the game will still generate a random number of opponents totally disregarding any parameters I choose.
Any suggestions?

NigelWulf:
It will not work, this is a known bug that I've talked to Aaron about, and hopefully will be addressed.
This causes a horrible error in mods with less than 20 available races (i.e., Star Trek Mod) regardless of what you set in settings.txt - and create annoying duplicate empires! The only way around this is to add AI empires manually.

Captain Kwok,
Thank you for the info! I barely just posted the topic and here I already have the answer. This forum and it's members never cease to amaze me.
Thanks again!

The SE4 Modding 101 tutorial (linked in my sig) might be of help to you.

Re: Puzzling settings.txt issue?
Actually... I should probably mention something about those settings not working 100% correctly in the tutorial.

Wait a second... I did change those settings and SE seem to follow them Granted, I never tried to use the same number for min. and max. but it did work.

Re: Puzzling settings.txt issue?
I changed those settings too, and I usually get what the 3 AI empires in minimun, 5 in medium, and I've never used the maximun, but the problem is that in minimun I always get the same 3 empires! The Drucks, the Amonkrie and the Xi'Chung.
How can I make this random?

Yes so, if you do it this way, it should work better than with the same number for min and max.
Minimum Computer Player High Setting := 12
Maximum Computer Player High Setting := 13
Minimum Neutral Player High Setting := 6
Maximum Neutral Player High Setting := 7

Re: Puzzling settings.txt issue?
SE4 won't add more than 5 neutrals though, so setting it at 6-7 is pointless.
