Default Aircraft Bomb Effects

Hi,

I've noticed that aircraft bombs seem very ineffective, even against soft targtes, and a direct hit to the hex seems to be the only chance of causing casualties. Cluster bombs and DPICM artillery munitions also seem a bit on the ineffectual side.

I cannot imagine that a Mk82 500lb bomb (or several for that matter) going off in 50-75 meters from troops, is not going to produced some casualties, unless the troops are dug-in or have some serious hard cover.

Another weapon that I've found seems to be "underpowered" is the M168 20mm Vulcan. I've fired it at (from a stationary position) at troops in the open, at ranges under 300 meters, with little effect. Having witnesed the M168 being fired at the range, I cannot imagine that the weapon would not be horrifically leathal vs. troops in the open, especially firing HEI ammo.

Are these gameplay/game balance issues?

Thanks,

SGT Gunn

I've wondered about that too. SPWAW had more realistic 'splash damage'. Seems like it takes a 2000 pounder to do any kind of damage 50+ yards away . . .

We are looking into this. The code was written to give blast damage but Andy just discovered another bit of code that was reducing the blast effect after the fact. A 500lb bomb should blast 2 hexes by the code but it was only affecting folks in 1 hex from the impact becasue of that added bit of code which has now been changed.

We are testing changes for this now. There was a bit of old code that was interferring with newer code he wrote for the game
- cluster munitions have a minimum blast radius of 1 now
- air-dropped cluster bombs have a radius of 2 hexes (speed and height of delivery, larger footprint)

but the changes are not confined to just cluster munitions but this was one or your concerns and we are testing this now
