Is there a barbarian attack event or is this a bug?
Events like this completely nerf an AI nation at start and they go nowhere!

There are quite a few of random events of some kind of independents attacking one of your provinces, barbarians is one of them. There are also vinemen, knights, and a band of adventurers. It's just extremely unlikely to hit your capitol on turn 2-3 like what looks to have happened there.

I think troglodytes are the worst. Something like 50 size four tramplers can take down just about any PD that hasn't been bought in ridiculous numbers. IIRC the event also kills a lot of population.
The vampire count event is usually hilariously inneffective.

The trog event also gives a magical site (Deepest Cavern) with 1E income.

There is more than one troglodyte event. The one that gives the site is known as the Kaspar event, for Kaspar of the Cave, who is mentioned in it.
The other one is earthquake + loss of temple + 10-25% popkill + trogs, so it's a lot worse.

Make an artifact Sickle that makes death gems from the souls of these you slay, and you will just love these pretty naive barbarians!

The Ancient Presence is a bit worse than that. It brings you from 30K pop to oh, about 500 or so. And then you've got a province full of manikin beasties plus the Ancient Presence himself to tidy up.

I didn't even know about this one. Do you need turmoil 3 or something to get it?
