This seems a little too good...
Just got my copy and I've only played about 3 hours worth so far. I had noticed the Gorgon had the new petrification mechanic and thought that quite cool, then I was reading in the manual and noticed you get awe for dominion 9 and 10. Thinking it might be good to have a turn one pretender with 2 passive buffs that require MR checks to successfully attack I made a 10 dominion Gorgon for quick playtesting. With indy's at 8 I was able to obliterate all around me from turn 1 on, with only archers giving me any trouble. It didn't matter that I picked up a couple afflictions because she comes with recuperation too! Plus full item slots for when the forging starts.
Seems a little powerful to me... But don't take my word for it, make a 10 dominion Gorgon and throw her at indeps alone.
P.S. Very pleased with the game, I really want to get far enough into a game to see a Doom Horror/Demon Lord but can't stop remaking to check out cool new stuff yet. They are different right? Different sprites in the blurbs in the manual.

Awe/Fear combo works well, too. Of course, going to high dominion is expensive, and that means you aren't getting something else you could have. Awe is good against independents, good against many national units, and weak or useless against many other national units and most summons. It also doesn't help against Archers.
BTW, Gorgon used to be Medusa, and had the petrification ability but not the icon for it.

The mechanics of it didn't change at all? I never noticed that many people dying trying to attack her, guess I should have payed more attention. I agree that awe has its downsides, it really only functions as a backup when petrification doesn't go off and the combo seems really powerful for something I didn't have to monkey with my scales to get and could use from turn 1.

Gorgon/Medusa could be sweet in Dom2 as well. Main problem is that you have to take her into melee to use her auto-kill, and her HPs were low enough that she could easily die.

High dominions isn't that expensive for some nations.

Re: This seems a little too good...
I'd played with Medusa in Dom2 and while her hp were low, with Earth/Nature paths Ironskin/Invulnerability and Regen were easy enough that she had little trouble with normal troops.
Petrification is probably the most brutal aura. Probably a good thing it's only(?) available with the Gorgon. Kind of a shame she's another example of SC/bless platform combination.

Re: This seems a little too good...
One artifact also gives the petrification ability, and there might be few unique monsters, but it's still a rare ability.
