quick question
If we decide to not continue playing a PBEM campaign and not finish it, and stop even the current battle in the middle of it, then start a new PBEM campaign on the same slot, is it going to cause a problem?

Re: quick question
No a new game overwrites it in PBEM Registry

Re: quick question
So, there is zero chance any future games will be affected?

Re: quick question
Yup.
Once an existing game is overwritten it's gone!

Re: quick question
Speaking of overwriting games, in my Save Game menu, most slots automatically name the save game by turn, contender names, and date. However, a few of these must have been altered by me at some point and are a fixed name (unless I manually change it). Is there any way I can relatively easily restore the automatic naming convention?

You need to save to a blank named slot without entering your own string to get the default name convention. Or over a slot that is already using the default convention, of course.
Probably the only way to get a slot to use that convention (once you have given a non default name to it) is to remove any unused/unwanted save game slots from the save game folder (via windows).
I must admit that for most games I own, I do tend to go through and remove unwanted or obsolete save games from time to time. It can save a quite a few megabytes of disk space!. (No game that I know of has a "delete" function for its savegames, so it has to be done manually outside the game).
edit - and the filename in SP is held inside the .cmt data file. So simply deleting that while your game is loaded and then re-saving to the now "blank" slot may work (have not tried it).

There was a period when many strategy games did not have ta delete button, but many newer and older (than winspmbt original date of release) games have it. It would be nice to have it, but it is hardly something needed IMO.
