A new game/dev to work w/ Illwinter & Shrapnel!
Ok, Shrapnel, looking for the next big game?
Illwinter, tired of Dominions and want to do something new?
Why don't you guys contact this indie developer and work with him to make a marketable game!

Dwarf Fortress is an AWESOME game, amazingly deep, but it has almost 0 polish. Ascii style graphics, virtually no SFX. But the heart and soul is there.
Just a thought .

Toady doesn't want to work with anyone else from what I gather. He's happy designing his ascii game and his own little world with zero outside interference
Sides, the game is fun even with the current "graphics"

Uh, first, why do you post this in the forum for Illwinter's Dominions 3 game instead of the general Shrapnel forums?
Next, what makes you think that this game needs help? It's freeware, and it is successful. It has received lots of awards already. The creator seems to like it being freeware and living on donations only.

Dwarf Fortress is the successor to Slaves to Armok: God of Blood, a hack and slash role-playing game. Dwarf Fortress discarded God of Blood's 3D graphics in favor of a text user interface and incorporated economic and strategy modes. On-screen displays utilize code page 437 characters in 16 different colors, and the developers state that graphic representation is not a significant focus.

There you have it, straight from Wikipedia's page on Dwarf Fortress. The predecessor had 3D graphics. This was scrapped in Dwarf Fortress, so it must have been done for a reason. Probably a hommage to the Roguelikes out there.
There are already sprite packs for the game. The game does not seem to need any of the help you mentioned if its community can provide this on its own. And it doesn't need to get marketed. See here:

He said "make a marketable game", not "make Dwarf Fortress marketable."
He may have meant what you said, but I would not have been so quick to jump all over him.

Okay, seems I read that wrong, it sounded like he wants to get them to sell Dwarf Fortress. A cooperation with the Bay 12 Games guys to develop a new game would be interesting

Are those two pics examples of sprite packs available for the game?? I might give it another try, then! I loved the concept, but wasn't prepared to try and memorize what all the ascii symbols represented. Too busy for that kind of effort.
