Default OT: Installing a second OS

I've either moved everything from the D drive to the C drive or deleted it; I've checked to make sure the computer still boots. Is there anything I need to know before I format and install Win98 on D?

(Like, how do I switch OS's; will the second OS interfere with the old OS; anything that I should know, no matter how silly or obvious?)

Me. Because its cool.
Honestly, I'm looking to learn some Linux and do some dev work on it, but I still need to do dev work in Windows, and Linux has some servers I might be using in the future.
Thus, I created a four partition system with RHEL 4 and Win2k pro.
Its a sweet setup.

If you install 98 before XP, XP will detect it and give you a list of OSes to boot at startup time. It doesn't work so well going the other way around, really. 98 doesn't have any support for multiple OSes on the computer. You might have to do an emergency reinstall of XP from the CD to get it to have two OSes recognized. Unless someone has an easier way...

i've 98 & 2000 installed what i did was:

1- Install win98 (with all the driver etc, etc, etc)
2- Install Win2000 (using a clean installation, if you do an update you won't have 2 op. systems)

When 2000 finish installing it automatically setup the option to select wich op. sys. do you want to run ( a menu will apear when your computer boots), i think XP SHOULD work the same way, i don't know what op. sys. you are using now but if it's XP or 2000, check if you have NTFS because if you're using NTFS you won't be able to boot on DOS. You must be using FAT or FAT32.

Just remember you need to install the older OS -first-. The newer one will detect the old one and start the process of setting up dual-boot for you.

If dual-booting Windows and Linux, always install Windows first. The friendlier distros, such as Red Hat, Mandrake, and SuSE will detect windows, and offer to set up dual booting.

Win 9x/Me can't read NTFS, so they need a FAT32 partition ready for them to use. Linux can read and write to FAT32 quite well, but should be installed to its own partition with its own filesystem anyway.

After that, both operating systems should operate normally.

I've got XP for the current OS, Win98 will be the new OS and both drives are FAT32.

Thanks.

What do I install it in? Dos?

That won't work very well Narf. The older OS must go on first. If you attempt to install 98 with XP already there you will most likely not be able to boot XP again. Then again, going from XP to 98 will be an upgrade anyway...
