OT: Reach for the stars

Just hours ago i was able to pick up a packed (not sealed though) version of Reach for stars.
Ive gone through the tutorial and the games seems nice.

Any suggestion on which race to play ? I just did the tutorial and afterwards a free game as the hive race, 40 turns, barely enough to get myself 3 scout-ships. I lost pointwise
General tactics ?
Are there mods available ? Patches ?

I recall this game from 2000. It was not widely marketed and from what I recall it had significant limitations. Hense it never gained a following compared to the original game from many many years before.

The 4 X markert has been utterly bleak since 2000. Afte SE IV was released, no other games have come along that can challenged the depth and game play offered by SEIV. Moo3 was an abyssimal (sp) failure that its only saving grace was that it would provide years of spiteful and rightously rude comments from people using it as an example of poor game developement and publishing scamming.

We desperately need a new 4 x game, not counting SE V. (GalCiv is not a 4x game, it is a Space Civ game. The two are completely differant genra.)

Actually this Reach for the stars aint that bad. It offers some nice aspects, like species need different worlds to live on, referring to gravity and temperature etc. This was implented in MoO 3 as well, but not in SE 4.

MoO 3 is not that bad. Just days ago i reinstalled it, and its quite okay. There is even a resolution mod, allowing the game to be played in 1024 * 768, compared to stock 800 * 640.

Apart from that, you can always play MoO 2.

And FreeOrion looks awesome as well. Latest release is v 0.3 but it already has many features and graphics ready, apart from a working combat model. www.freeorion.org


Galactic Civ 1/2 = Crap. Combats is so boring its hardly believeable...you are supposed to reign the galaxy with fleets consisting of 3 ships, fighting for about 4 seconds before a battle is resolved ?
