Computer Virus & Allegiance Subverter

I have the regular Version of SE4 (Version 1.49, not SE4 Gold).

Are you supposed to be able to use tactic like Computer Virus and then the Allegiance Subverter to steal ships? I can't think of a possible defense for it (using both a Master Computer plus Bridge/LS/CQ doesn't seem to help). So far I have only played around with this in the Simulator but it seems a really cheesy tactic for me to use. Is this something that people do in multi-player games?

The situation you are facing was working so well it was taken down with the 1.76 patch (or was it the one before?) for SE4 Gold. Since this patch, the Allegiance Subverters do nothing against Master Computers, even when the computer has been destroyed. And you are quite correct in saying there is no defence against this kind of designs (under 1.49), except destroy all Psychic races on sight.

Now we have quite the opposite situation: it is very easy to counter Psychic races since their Allegiance Subverters no longer work on destroyed Master Computers, and they do not seem to have much else going for them (well, they have improved ship training, and decent regular weapons, but that seems to be mostly all).

There is no defense at all against it in pre-Gold SE4. You can try swarming them with small ships, hoping that they can't convert your entire force at once, but that is about it...

Well, Fighters could be your weapon then. I believe that subverter does not work on them. Also missile ships with maximum range tactics.
