Default Do you get magic items from commanders you kill?

I have just killed off Vanheim and many commanders during our 50 turn war and I never got a magic item. Did they simply not have any or do they disappear when you kill a commander with a magic item???

There is a chance of getting items from enemy commanders, I don't know the exact percentage but I ave received numerous items.

When you have gotten items, do they appear in your lab or on a commander you won the battle with?

Dropped magic items have a chance of being picked up by the victorious commanders present - assuming that the commanders are able to carry them. They will be immediately equipped.

E.g. if your commanders have filled up their hand slots, you will never pick up a weapon or shield.

To maximize your chances of loot, bring along a lot of cheap commanders with all slots empty for important battles.

...whereas your pretender and perhaps other valuable commanders should have slots -- especially misc and hand slots -- filled with precautionary chaff lest your Titan pick up a Fever Fetish or Knife of the Damned, or your Cyclops choose an Eye of Aiming.

If I remember right you also increase your chances if you actually KILL the enemy commanders rather than them rout. Even if they rout to nowhere (no friendly neighbor province). Another good reason to have fast flankers set to attack rearmost. Usually 4-footed units or flyers that can survive combat.
