It really depends what type of multiplayer game. Basiclly anyone with E-mail can host a PBEM. If you are hosting a server for specific sessions, maybe half of people can do it (computer speed, firewalls and routers being common problems). For a 24 hour host game you need the same conditions as a session style game, plus a constant internet connection.

If you're running some flavor of Windows, you can do it like this:

1: Find your Dominions 2 icon on the desktop (or in the start menu).

2: Right click on the icon and select Copy.
3: Right click on the desktop and click Paste.
4: Now you need to formulate a command line for the game--the easiest way (if you have a fairly good computer) is to use the -XXX switch and set up the game using the interface.
a: Right click on the new icon and click Properties...
b: Under the Shortcut tab, find the Target entry.
Add "-S -w -xxx" to the end of the entry so that
your entry looks like this:

"C:\Program Files\dominions2\dom2.exe" -S -w -xxx

c: Click Ok
d: Follow the onscreen instructions (we use Port 10000) the lowest port number, 1024, doesn't always work.

5: If you have a slower computer, you will have to make a more elaborate command line. Consult the command_line_switches.txt file in the doc directory under your dominions2 directory for a list of switches. A sample line looks like this:

"C:\Program Files\dominions2\dom2.exe" -S -T --port 10000 --hofsize 15 --renaming -q --mapfile eye.map c

This Target line runs dominions with Hall of Fame size 15 with renaming on, using quickhost on Desert Eye map. The game file name will be "c".

If you would like me to formulate a command line for you, just post your desired options here, and I'll write you a shortcut.

If you are using Windows XP (which has a Firewall included with the operating system) or you have a 3rd party Firewall, you must either allow traffic on the selected dominions 2 port and IP interface (your external/internal ip address depending upon where your players are located) or disable the Firewall while the game is running.

Since I have a mac, I can't do your command line method. So 1.6ghz Dsl no firewall, could I host. Could I use 1 copied dom2 to host and the orignal to join my own hosted game? Can I do the game settings manuely instead of a command line?

You should be able to start 2 instances of DOM at once. I would recommend using windowed mode, though.

Choose "Multiplayer", first "server", with the second "connect to server" ..
