Question Morale checks

[Newb-ish] So I was re-reading the manual. Where for the first time I realize it's saying: morale checks are against squads (and results applied back to squad as a whole, I think). The only relevance of individual morale is the contribution to squad average.
  1. Do I assume that a commander counts as his own squad, not sharing with any squads he's commanding, and doing his own morale checks?
  2. I could mix different units into a squad to alter morale? E.g. if I had a few good but low morale units of one type, I could add in other high morale units to improve the first guys?
  3. Because of the rule "a squad taking damage which has <= 4 units", when I have sometimes made a tiny squad out of a couple of animals that was a bad idea?
  4. Also, the commander guy, if he's always in a squad of one as per question #1, every time he gets injured he'll have to take a morale check based on this rule?

Do commanders really break as often as they should, if they take moral checks every time they get injured? Thugs don't seem to break very often.

Looking closer, it's no more than one check per round, so it isn't that many to pass and commanders should get the survivor bonus (+5) since everyone in the squad is still alive. I guess that brings it more in line with my experience.

Another question: Do the various special morale types really average in with the squads morale? 4 morale 10 and 1 longdead morale 50 really has morale 18? Or a berserker instead would be ~28?

Mindless morale (50) is not taken into account when averaging squad morale, so in your example squad morale would remain 10. (But the longdead still wouldn't rout when the rest of his squad does.) I'm almost positive the same applies to berserkers, but feel free to correct me.

Not so certain about morale 30, which would be the highest 'normal' morale, but I'm guessing that should be counted and averaged with the others?

I don't think 30 is actually "normal". For instance, prophets and demiliches seem to be immune to fear.

Yeah, I probably didn't phrase that correctly. 30 isn't quite normal in that you won't run away due to mundane reasons, but unlike the other two, who won't rout no matter what, they will still turn tail when the entire army routs, as well as at the turn limit.

Thinking about it that way though, it probably means that their morale isn't averaged in with the others either. Else, logically, they'd have to suffer the same consequense as the regular guys when squad morale breaks, and run off, which I don't think they do.

Hard to be certain though, morale 30 is quite rare, even more so for troops. Can't really think of any off the top of my head. (Allthough I'm sure there are some.)
