Default Buy D2 now or wait for D3?

$$$ dictates that it's a one or the other option. (gotta save up for SE5, too).

Less expensive to pre-order DOM_3 right now compared with buying DOM_2 right now.

Maybe you should ask Shrapnel for a combi-pack Dom2+Dom3-preorder for a combined price? I wonder what they do with left-over Dom2 after Dom3 becomes available, given that it seems to be superior in every direction, without changing the basic principles unlike other sequels (which is a good thing, e.g. I was really disappointed with the newer warlords titles).

tough question, i would suggest getting dom2 and then saving up for dom3 before getting SE5. I probably wouldve went for getting dom3 first but getting dom2 will let you atleast get used to the game a bit (dom2 is probably the best value for money game i have ever bought and the only game i have that even comes close to it is oblivion)

I would be worried that once dom3 comes out, you will have a difficult time finding other people to play with.

Hard call. Do you enjoy DomII demo? You could play more of that, with small maps and too many AIs (only 4-6 provinces per nation), perhaps blitz games with humans. I've found those quite fun, and the limitations aren't too severe that way. Then buy Dom3 when it comes out.

Hrm if its that serious that you can only buy one game in 6 or more months (that was the conservitive estimate I believe), then you should get dom 2 and wait till you have enough money at some point to get dom 3. Its been what? 2 going on 3 years since its release? That would seem to indicate that you don't mind going back and ordering older titles. Depending on how enthusiastic you are about Dom 2...you should be able to get games up to the release of Dom 3. And if you do, you'd have gotten back 5x your investment.

I'd suggest waiting, as well. The Doms 1 demo sufficed for me until Doms 2 came out... and that was for at least 2 years

If you're short on cash I'd say preorder D3 and wait for the release, it shouldn't be long now, and play D2 demo in the meantime.
Myself I did buy D1 two months before D2 went out but I had money and wanted to "help" Illwinter. Since then I've played so much D2 that I think I should have paid them *more* !

The real question is how long before Dom III is released. If we are looking at a couple months, the answer is simple. If we are looking at 6, 8, 10 months...then the answer is also simple, just different.
