Default Pre-SEIV (1.49) AI and AI Mods (TDM)

Simply put, do they put up a challenging fight?

I recently found SEIV v1.49 on an old laptop of mine. Never played it and don't remember installing it.

I browsed Online to find out a little bit about the game and I saw many Posts and suggestions that a AI Mod (particularly TDM Modpack) is required for a good single player fight.

I like enough of what I read about SEIV to put some time into it, but I'm not sure if I want to get GOLD right away.

I'm real picky with AIs in TBG, if they cheat or use to predictable of pattern the game usually doesn't Last long on my HD.

So my questions are;

Will playing SEIV v1.49 AI ruin my interest for the game? Are the AIs much more superior in the GOLD edition?

Will the older Versions of the TDM Modpack still give me a challenge?

Is the Proportions Mod available for v1.49?

Thank you in advance.

BTW: I got a really good first impression of Shrapnel Games from the website... seems like they are interested in providing deep strategy games rather then a superficial one with flashy graphics.

"Will playing SEIV v1.49 AI ruin my interest for the game? Are the AIs much more superior in the GOLD edition?"

Not "much more challenging", but certainly a bit more challenging (esp. with some mods that are Gold-only).

"Will the older Versions of the TDM Modpack still give me a challenge?"

Certainly. Look on SpaceEmpires.net to find the 2.00 Version of TDM mod, the Last for pre-gold.

"Is the Proportions Mod available for v1.49?"

That mod is not possible without gold, as there are a few fundamental principles that only became possible with Gold (pop mass settings, for example).

"BTW: I got a really good first impression of Shrapnel Games from the website... seems like they are interested in providing deep strategy games rather then a superficial one with flashy graphics. "

Indeed they do!

forget the AI, find a game running 1.49 on pbw and play againsed humans!

half the game is about politics, you cant tell the ai not to
"enter system X with any ships bigger than a destroyer"
or
"in two turns I will attack race Y in system X because they did such and such, will you attack them in system Z?"

I'm now well into my first game using the TDM Modpack, and this is cetainly the most political game I have experienced so far. I can't compare it to PBW, because I have yet to participate in PBW, but it's much more challenging than SEIV without the TDM Modpack. The AI is not nearly so single-minded and predictable.
