A Greeting and Question
I just got Dominions II Last week and Im really loving it. The shear amount of depth in it made the demo a big enough drain on my time that I didnt actually buy the game for a month. I kinda suck at it right now but I have managed to win a few games, most notably as R'lyeh and Ulm.
Anyway, my question is this: is there any way for mages to advance permanently in paths besides empowerment? I understand that temporary battle spells that will boost levels for the duration of the battle, but the empowerment description seems to hint that there are alternate ways to give peramnent levels. Am I just reading too far into a bit of text?

Re: A Greeting and Question
Yes: The spell "Wish", level 9 Alteration, requires Astral 9 to cast, can be used to permanently raise all magic ranks by 1, if you wish for "magic power". Other than that, only empowerment can grant additional magic ranks on a permanent basis.
Many items, however, exist that will increase the wearer's magic ranks as long as he uses the item. The ranks are lost when the items are removed, however, so this isn't truly permanent....but it is usually good enough.

If you Wish for magic power, do you gain rank 1 in areas you presently do not have?

Yes! Why do you think I do it? Hmm... I have only used Wish to increase magic power of my Pretender, which of course do not gives Holy/Unholy increase (Pretenders can't have them). Yet, do Wish gives Holy/Unholy level to non-pretender non-priest units? For that matter, does it even boost Holy/Unholy for units already with Holy/Unholy levels? Or is that a different wish, "priestly power" anyone?

Wish never boosts Holy/Unholy, only magic ranks. This is regardless of whether the unit wishing is a pretender, a holy or unholy priest, a prophet, etc. There is no priestly power wish.
